The forest of Paimpont in the heart of Brittany is the legendary Brocéliande, enchanted woodland of the Arthurian tales. Here you find Merlin's tomb, where the wizard is said to be held in eternal sleep by the fairy Viviane, and the fountain of Barenton, whose waters could reputedly summon thunderstorms. In the Val sans Retour – the Valley of No Return – the fairy Morgane trapped unfaithful lovers until Lancelot broke the spell. To this day walkers speak of whispers, shapes among the trees and paths that seem to shift.
