Tuileries Garden

Île-de-France · Frankrike · Urban site

The little red man — the butcher Catherine de' Medici had killed — appeared to every ruler whose downfall was near.

The Tuileries Garden in the heart of Paris carries one of the city's oldest ghost legends: the little red man. When Catherine de' Medici began building the Tuileries Palace in 1564, the butcher Jean l'Écorcheur was disposed of — he knew too much about the court's secrets — and soon afterwards a blood-soaked figure dressed in red began to appear. Down the centuries the legend has him surfacing as an omen of doom: to Marie-Antoinette in 1792, to Napoleon before Waterloo, and one last time as the palace burned in 1871. The palace is gone, but at dusk in the gardens the story lives on.
