Rue Chanoinesse
Paris · Frankrike · Alley
The barber shaved his last customer, the neighbour baked the pies — and white figures still glide across these cobbles on winter nights.
In the 14th century a barber is said to have kept his shop at number 20, wall to wall with a pastry cook whose little meat pies were famous across the city. According to the legend the barber cut the throats of lone students in his chair and passed the bodies through a trapdoor to his neighbour, who baked them into his wares. A German traveller's dog exposed them: the animal howled for days outside the shop waiting for its master. Both men are said to have been burnt and their houses torn down. Historians have never found the case in any archive, but the street lives on it. Residents speak of white silhouettes sliding soundlessly over the stones, of figures glimpsed in window panes that vanish when you turn, and of an inexplicable smell of burnt meat in cold winter air.
