From the flames the last Grand Master of the Templars summoned pope and king before God's court within a year — both were dead by December.

On 18 March 1314 a pyre was raised on the small Île aux Juifs, later joined to the Île de la Cité and today the southern tip of the Square du Vert-Galant. There Jacques de Molay, last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was burnt together with Geoffroy de Charnay. According to legend he cried from the flames that he summoned Pope Clement V and King Philip the Fair before God's court within the year, and cursed their lines to the thirteenth generation. The pope died that April, the king in November. Ever since, Molay's figure is said to walk the spot where the pyre stood and on between the Place Dauphine, the Pont Neuf and the tip of the garden, always facing the water. A plain memorial plaque marks the place; the darkness and the current do the rest.
