Cross Bones Graveyard

London · Storbritannia · Kyrkogård · Skrekk 3/5

Behind a ribbon-decked iron gate in Southwark lie 15,000 outcasts — the 'Winchester Geese' the Church profited from in life but refused to bury in death.

On Redcross Way lies one of London's strangest sacred places: an unconsecrated mass grave for the medieval 'Winchester Geese' — prostitutes licensed by the Bishop of Winchester yet denied Christian burial — and later for Southwark's poorest. An estimated 15,000 people, more than half of them children, were packed in before the ground closed as 'completely overcharged with dead' in 1853. When 1990s Underground works lifted skeletons from the soil, the site awoke: the gate grew a skin of ribbons, name tags and offerings, and a vigil for 'the outcast dead' is held every month. Visitors describe sudden tears, phantom touches and a dense presence at the gate — geese still guarding their flock.
