284 Green Street — the Enfield Poltergeist
London · Storbritannia · Hus · Skrekk 5/5
Furniture slid across the floors, knockings answered questions and an eleven-year-old girl spoke with a dead man's voice — the Enfield council house became the world's most famous poltergeist case.
Between 1977 and 1979 this modest council house on Green Street, Enfield, was the most scrutinised haunted house on Earth. The family living here reported furniture sliding across the floor, toy bricks flying through rooms, knockings that answered questions — and most chilling of all, the eleven-year-old daughter speaking in trance with a deep male voice, identifying itself as a man who had died in an armchair in the living room years before. Police officers, journalists and photographers witnessed phenomena they could not explain; a policewoman signed a statement describing a chair moving on its own. Investigators Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair spent months in the house. The case remains as contested as it is famous — hoax, hysteria or true poltergeist — and has inspired films and series worldwide.
