All Saints, Isleworth — the boy by the porch

London · Storbritannia · Kyrka · Skrekk 3/5

A woman passing the churchyard late one evening in 1972 saw a small boy by the gate. He was gone when she looked back.

The parish church of Old Isleworth on the Thames has a medieval tower but a modern nave — everything except the tower and west end burned in an arson attack in 1943. The graveyard around it is old and crowded. One evening in 1972 a woman walking past saw a small boy standing perfectly still by the church porch; when she looked again he was gone. The area carries a long run of similar accounts. On the Syon estate a few hundred metres away, seven trees once marked the graves of seven nuns of Syon Abbey, and in the winter of 1973 a man cycling home from work was followed all the way from the Isleworth gate by a white light hovering just above the ground. The old river village with its fire-scarred church is among the darker corners of west London.
