The night the sixth sister was carried away, Athenians heard the five who remained weeping. Ever since there have been only five on the porch.

Athenians never called them caryatids. They said "the girls" or "the girls of the castle", and they spoke of them as if they were alive. When Lord Elgin's men lifted the sixth of the six marble maidens from the south porch of the Erechtheion in the early nineteenth century and shipped her to London, the story spread through the city: all night long, lamentation and weeping were heard from the five sisters left behind, still carrying the roof alone. The legend has held for two hundred years and is one of the few Athenian ghost stories about stone rather than people. The figures on the Acropolis today are copies; five originals stand in the Acropolis Museum, and the sixth sister remains in the British Museum.
