Lake Vouliagmeni (Limni Vouliagmenis)
Attika · Grekland · Natural site
The lake's nereid lures young men into the cave passages, say the old people of Vouliagmeni — and the labyrinth below has never been measured to its end.
Lake Vouliagmeni lies still and lukewarm beneath a vertical cliff twenty minutes from Athens, and it looks harmless. The older people of the area have always said otherwise. According to the legend a nereid lives in the caves beneath the surface, and she calls to young men who swim out too far — whoever goes looking for her does not find the way back. Where the open swimming area ends, a labyrinth of passages and submerged caverns begins, mapped by divers for kilometres without reaching its end, and closed to the public since 1995. The nereid is the explanation folk memory chose for everything the lake has kept. Attica has older parallels: water that belongs to someone, and takes back whoever forgets it.
