Thalassi on Mount Penteli (Thalassi Pentelis)

Attika · Grekland · Natural site

At midnight women in white danced by the water at Thalassi and called to whoever passed. Lamias, the shepherds said. Not women.

Where the mountain water once gathered into a small lake on the slope of Penteli lay the place called Thalassi. Local shepherds would not go there after dark. The lake was said to be inhabited by lamias and nereids, and at midnight women dressed in white would dance at the water's edge and call out to whoever passed — anyone who answered and came closer did not return the same. The story survived well into the twentieth century and only strengthened after a soldier died by the water in 1931. The lake is long gone and the ground built over, but the name Thalassi still stands on maps of Nea Penteli, and the legend is still told in the northern suburbs.
