Every night horses are heard neighing and men fighting at the burial mound. Whoever comes deliberately to listen pays for it.

The mound on the plain of Marathon covers the Athenians who fell in 490 BC, and it carries the oldest recorded ghost story in Greece. Pausanias wrote that every night one can hear horses neighing and men fighting on the plain, but that going there to wait for it does no good: anyone who seeks the sound out on purpose is punished, while anyone who happens past unknowing goes away unharmed. The same plain belongs to Echetlaios, the unknown man in peasant dress who according to the Athenians appeared in the middle of the battle, struck down Persians with a ploughshare and vanished without anyone able to say who he was. The Delphic oracle told them to honour him as a hero. The mound stands open in the fields, eight metres high.
