The stone bridge over the Arachthos river in Epirus is the setting of one of Greece's most famous folk ballads. Each night the arch collapsed, until a bird revealed that the master builder's own wife had to be walled up alive for the bridge to stand — which was done, and with her last breath she cursed the bridge to tremble forever. To this day locals say a silent female figure can be seen crossing the bridge on spring full-moon nights, the spirit of the sacrificed wife. The elegant arched bridge, medieval in origin and rebuilt in 1612, is the town's foremost landmark.
