Leros Psychiatric Hospital

Dodekanisos · Grekland · Hospital

Screams and whispers are said to rise from the empty wings at Lepida — as if the forgotten patients were never discharged.

In the abandoned wings on Leros, visitors tell of screams, whispers and a distinct sense of being watched — as if the forgotten never left the buildings. The legend calls them exactly that, the forgotten, because that is what they were: patients shipped away from all over Greece to an island in the Aegean and then spoken of no more.

The psychiatric hospital opened in 1957 in Italian-built naval barracks at Lepida. The conditions exposed in the 1980s shocked Europe — naked people in pens, without care and without names — and thousands lived and died here. Care has long since been reformed, but the empty wings remain, making this one of Greece's most harrowing places.
