According to a stubborn capital legend, on certain nights the rider steps down from his pedestal and rides through the streets of the historic centre. Neighbours around the square swear they have heard hooves galloping across the paving at midnight — with no horse to be seen. The tale is passed on as one of the city's classic ghost stories and lends the lively square an eerier cast after dark.
