Hotel Chelsea: The Dylan Thomas Room

We end at the Hotel Chelsea, opened in 1884 and perhaps the most legend haunted building in all of New York.

We end at the Hotel Chelsea, opened in 1884 and perhaps the most legend haunted building in all of New York. Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and Andy Warhol have all lived and worked here. And few buildings hold more ghost stories per square metre. Guests and residents tell of Dylan Thomas in room 205, of Nancy Spungen in room 100 even after the number was removed, and of a woman in Victorian dress in the stairwell, often linked to a hotel guest who took her own life in the 1910s.

But the history of the hotel gained a new layer recently. It closed for renovation in 2011 and reopened in 2022 as a luxury hotel, and many of the old permanent residents were forced out in a contested process. Since then the ghost stories have carried a bitter undertone: the question of who has really been driven out of the Chelsea. Here your walk through Greenwich Village ends, the neighbourhood that refuses to forget its dead, its poets and its lost.
