Young Veronika is said to have been walled into Veliki Tabor's ramparts – her laments still drift through the Zagorje nights.

In the 1420s Veronika of Desinić fell in love with Count Frederick of Celje, son of the powerful Herman II. The father threw his son into prison and put Veronika on trial as a witch, and when the court acquitted her he had her drowned instead – legend holds that her body was walled into the rampart by the castle's pentagonal tower. During renovation work a woman's skull was in fact found in the masonry, and it is displayed in the castle chapel today. Visitors speak of a woman's weeping and sighs echoing through the tower at night. The legend of Veronika is now protected as intangible cultural heritage in Croatia.
