Whistling Gyuri's Round (Grand Boulevard at Oktogon)

Budapest · Ungern · Urban site

The whistling man of the Grand Boulevard vanished without trace. Hear his sharp whistle and you stand at a crossroads, says the legend. Nobody knows where he went.

For thirty years he was one of Budapest's best-known figures: the man everyone called Füttyös Gyuri, Whistling Gyuri. He walked the Grand Boulevard and Rákóczi út at a brisk pace, day after day, a rolled-up sports paper under his arm and a whistle so sharp it cut through the traffic. Around 1995 he stopped appearing, and nobody has been able to say where he went. That is when the legend was born. People in Pest say Gyuri still walks his round and that his whistle can be heard at Oktogon when the street is empty — but only by someone standing at that moment before an important choice. If you hear him behind you, they say, do not turn around; decide. He was a living legend while he walked, and became a real one only when he vanished.
