Matthias Church

Budapest · Ungern · Church

The Madonna lay walled up for 145 years. When the wall collapsed in 1686 she stood before the praying men — and the defenders fled. The defenders fled the church.

When Buda fell in 1541, the church's statue of the Virgin was walled in behind a curved partition and forgotten. For a century and a half people prayed in the mosque built inside the church, unaware of what stood on the other side of the stone. On 2 September 1686, in the middle of the siege bombardment, the wall cracked and the Madonna suddenly stood before the kneeling men. The legend says the defenders read it as a sign that all was lost, fled the building in panic, and that the fortress fell the same day. The image has been called the miraculous Madonna of Buda ever since, and the darkened figure is pointed out as the proof. Visitors report that the candle flames before her bend although the air is still. The church has burned, been rebuilt and besieged since, but the image still stands in its side chapel.
