The hermit heard angels playing harps in the wind and withdrew into the mountain. His donkey walked down to the village for water alone.

In the flank of Szent Mihály hill above Nagymaros gapes a cave the villagers call Remete-barlang, the Hermit's Cave. The legend dates from the nineteenth century: a monk had a vision here of angels playing harps in the wind above the Danube Bend, and left his monastery to live alone in the mountain. People from the surrounding villages climbed up to him for counsel, and every day he sent his donkey down to the village alone to fetch water — the animal walked the path unled and returned loaded. After the hermit died, harp notes were still heard in the wind at the cave mouth, and hikers resting there at dusk still describe music that comes neither from the village nor the river. The path up from the village is steep and falls completely silent in the last hundred metres.
