The hexagonal residential tower on the Danube bank at Visegrád is known to everyone as Solomon's Tower. The name comes from King Solomon, deposed in the eleventh century and held captive at Visegrád by his cousin László. Popular tradition placed him in this tower, in the windowless lower floors, and told how lanterns were set in the openings at night to help boatmen find their way on the river. Historians have pointed out for more than a century that the tower was built by Béla IV in the 1250s, two hundred years after Solomon, and that the king was more likely held in the older fort on Sibrik hill to the north. The legend has refused to listen. The name stands on every sign, and visitors claim to hear footsteps in the empty vaults. The lower castle is still named after a prisoner who was never held there.
