Újpest's Ghost Estate
Budapest · Ungern · Urban site
Concrete blocks were raised straight on top of a cleared cemetery. One family fled the tenth floor in pyjamas — and the floor was sealed off.
In southern Újpest, where Pozsonyi utca runs toward the railway, the Magdolnaváros cemetery once lay. In the 1960s the burial ground was closed, the graves cleared and ten-storey blocks raised on the site. Workers struck bones in the excavations, and before the buildings were even finished the area had its name: Szellemtelep, the Ghost Estate. Residents reported sharp cracks inside the walls, knocking and footsteps in empty stairwells, cold draughts and flashes of light on the upper floors at night. The story reached its peak when a family fled the tenth floor in the middle of the night in their pyjamas. The whole floor is said to have been shut off afterwards with iron grilles, and the lift stopped serving it. The name Szellemtelep still sticks in local speech today.
