Local legend holds that the witches gathered at night for secret rites in the woods around Diósgyőr castle. Townspeople say the spirits of the executed women never left the place, and that eerie, screaming sounds are sometimes heard around the walls after dark.

The medieval castle on the edge of Miskolc was in the fourteenth century the residence of the Hungarian queens, one of the country's grandest complexes with four towers. The darker history came later: several witch trials were held in the district in the eighteenth century, and it is from those that the legends grew. The castle is restored today and full of medieval pageantry by day — but after closing time the old stories take hold again.
