The building at 60 Andrássy Avenue in Budapest served from the 1930s to the 1950s as headquarters first of the fascist Arrow Cross and then of the communist secret police, its basement holding interrogation rooms and cells where prisoners were tortured and executed. Since becoming the House of Terror memorial museum, stories have spread that the victims' spirits remain: visitors and staff have described sensing a woman whose eyes had been taken, a tormented couple, and a middle-aged man executed by his own comrades. The museum's reconstructed basement ranks among Budapest's most oppressive spaces – ghosts or no ghosts.
