14 Úri Street

Budapest (Borgkvarteren) · Ungarn · House

Every 20th of August two skeletal figures chained together are said to descend the staircase – and in 1943 two chained skeletons were found in a well beneath the house.

In the Castle District of Buda stands the house at 14 Úri Street, home to perhaps Budapest's eeriest recurring haunting. According to residents, every year on the 20th of August, around one o'clock, two skeletal figures shackled to one another would slowly descend the staircase. The tale received a chilling confirmation in 1943, when workers digging an air-raid shelter beneath the house uncovered a walled-up Ottoman-era well – and inside it, two skeletons bound together with chains. The house still stands on the peaceful old street, where few passers-by suspect what once lay beneath the floor.
