Belvelly Castle

Cork · Irland · Castle

Vain Margaret Hodnett starved her beauty away during a siege — and her mirror-less ghost still polishes the castle walls to this day.

The tower castle of Belvelly guards the narrow channel by Fota near Cobh and carries the legend of Margaret Hodnett, a beauty so vain she was said to have covered the walls with mirrors. A spurned suitor besieged the castle for months, and by the time starvation forced the family to surrender, Margaret's beauty had withered away. She had every mirror smashed or turned to the wall and refused to look at her reflection again. Her ghost, the Lady of the Mirrors, is said to still drift through the rooms rubbing at the stone walls as if polishing invisible glass — and in one wall the outline of a woman's face is claimed to have worn itself through.
