The White Lady still walks the ramparts in her wedding gown — the bride who threw herself into the sea after her groom was executed by mistake.

The star-shaped Charles Fort outside Kinsale was built in the 1670s to guard the harbour mouth, but it is best known for its White Lady. According to legend, the commander's daughter married a young officer who, on his wedding night, stood in for a drowsy sentry — and was shot for sleeping at his post on the orders of his own father-in-law. When the bride found her dead husband she threw herself from the ramparts in her wedding gown. For centuries since, soldiers and visitors have encountered a woman in white sweeping through the fort, and children are said to see her most often of all.
