Doonagore Castle

Clare · Irland · Castle

Shipwrecked sailors of the Spanish Armada were hanged here in 1588 — and in the sea fog around the tower their figures are said to drift still.

The round tower of Doonagore watches over Doolin and the Atlantic, and its darkest chapter was written in 1588 when the Spanish Armada was wrecked along the Clare coast. Around 170 shipwrecked sailors from a stranded vessel were captured by High Sheriff Boetius Clancy and hanged on the hill near the castle, then tipped into mass graves at the spot still known as the hill of the Spanish widow. Ever since, the sailors' ghosts are said to drift in the sea fog around the tower, and fishermen have told of figures walking between the castle and the cliffs when the mist rolls in off the Atlantic.
