The mansion on St Stephen's Green was built in the 1730s and joined into one house by the Guinness family. The legend attached to it concerns a young Catholic servant girl dying in the staff quarters. She asked for a priest, but the master of the house refused to let one in, and she died without the last rites. Ever since, it is told, a cross appears each Holy Thursday in one of the window panes, clear enough to be seen from the street and impossible to wash away. It is said to come back year after year as Easter draws near, whatever is done to the pane. The house today holds Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs. The story is one of the house's fixed tales, still repeated by those who work there. Which window is meant depends on who tells it.
