A robbers' chain stretched across the road in the dark took Buck Jones's head. The white horse still carries him home along Jones's Road.

Frederick Edward Jones, known in Dublin as Buck Jones, owned the Clonliffe estate and ran a theatre in the city in the 1790s. False friends and bad business brought him to the debtors' prison, and he died penniless in 1834. The road that led out to his house still carries his name. In the version Dubliners prefer to tell, he was riding home one night after gambling when robbers stretched a chain across the road in the dark; the horse ran on, but the head did not go with it. By the early 1900s the people around Clonliffe were certain you could see him coming: a headless rider on a white horse, at an easy canter along Jones's Road toward a gate that no longer stands. Sober history has him dying quietly in his bed, but Drumcondra never took to that version.
