Archdeacon William Bulkeley, son of the Archbishop of Dublin, built Old Bawn House by the Dodder in 1635. The house was damaged in the rising of 1641, restored, and demolished long after, but the legend outlived the building. On the anniversary of Bulkeley's death, tradition in Tallaght says, a coach comes up the road toward the house: drawn by six headless horses, carrying two passengers with two footmen behind, and it halts at the gate. Whoever happens to see the equipage has a year and a day left to live. The story was one of the fixed tales of the Dodder valley and was tied to the night around 8 September. Bulkeley brought a vast carved stone chimneypiece to the house, and it stayed the wonder of the district long after the rest was gone.
