The tower house at Straffan was raised in 1288 by Nicholas Barby and has taken in guests for over four hundred years. Of Barby himself it is told that he meant to avoid paying rent even after death, and so had himself buried within the masonry, neither above ground nor below — and that the wall must never be pulled down. The modern stories concern two rooms. In the corridor between rooms nine and ten a man's figure walks straight through the wall where a door once stood. In room four, which carries the name Katherine Dillon, a lady in a cloak sits by the bed; she meets the guest's eye, smiles kindly, rises, and slips out through the closed window. The castle is run as a hotel today, its rooms named for the families that held it.
