Kyteler's Inn

Kilkenny · Irland · Pub

Alice Kyteler was condemned as a witch in 1324 after four husbands died — she vanished without trace, but they say she never left her Kilkenny inn.

Kyteler's Inn in Kilkenny was founded in the 1260s by Alice Kyteler, a wealthy innkeeper whose four husbands all died in suspicious circumstances — each death leaving her richer. In 1324 she was accused in one of Europe's earliest witchcraft trials of poisoning her men and making offerings to a demon. Alice fled without trace, probably to England, while her maid Petronilla de Meath was tortured and burned at the stake in her place. At the inn, Alice's spirit is said never to have checked out: staff tell of glasses moved, cold draughts in the 13th-century cellar vaults and the glimpse of a woman's figure in the stone chamber.
