Loftus Hall
Wexford · Irland · Haunted house
During a card game one stormy night the mysterious guest dropped a card — and Anne Tottenham saw cloven hooves where his feet should have been.
Loftus Hall on the Hook Peninsula is often called the most haunted house in Ireland. Legend tells of an elegant stranger who sought shelter with the Tottenham family on a storm-lashed night in the 1760s and was invited to join a game of cards. When young Anne bent down to retrieve a dropped card, she saw that the guest had cloven hooves — whereupon he shot up through the roof in a ball of fire. Anne was never the same again; she was locked away in the Tapestry Room where she wasted away, and neither her restless spirit nor the memory of the devil's visit is said to have ever left the house. According to tradition, the hole he left in the roof could never be properly repaired.
