Beneath Lough Gur sleeps the enchanted Earl Geróid Iarla — every seventh year he rides across the water on a horse shod with silver.

Lough Gur in Limerick is ringed by Neolithic tombs, stone circles and a denser web of legend than perhaps any other Irish lake. Here Geróid Iarla, the third Earl of Desmond and son of the goddess Áine, is said not to have died but to sleep enchanted beneath the water. Every seventh year he rides across the lake's surface in the moonlight on a white horse shod with silver shoes, and only when the shoes are worn through will the spell break and the Earl return. According to folk belief the lake claims a life every seven years, and on Áine's sacred hill of Knockainey nearby, the goddess and her retinue have been glimpsed for centuries.
