Marsh's Library, opened in 1707, is Ireland's oldest public library and stands almost untouched, with its dark oak shelving and the cages where readers were locked in with the most precious volumes. Its founder, Archbishop Narcissus Marsh, grieved deeply when his young niece eloped and married in secret; according to legend she left a farewell note tucked into one of his books, which he could never find. His ghost is therefore said to wander the shelves at night, pulling out volume after volume and leafing through them restlessly in search of the letter. Over the years, librarians have found books inexplicably moved in the inner rooms.
