One Sunday the piper struck up and the girls danced through the Sabbath. They stand in the ring still, and he stands alone outside it.

On a hill near Hollywood in west Wicklow stand sixteen grey granite blocks in a ring some twenty metres across, with a single stone set apart outside it. The Bronze Age people who raised them left no words behind, but the district has its explanation. One Sunday a piper came by and struck up a tune, and the young women began to dance in the ring in the middle of the Sabbath. The punishment was immediate: all of them were turned to stone where they stood. The ring is the dancers, the outlier is the piper, condemned to stand outside the circle he set moving. Another version has them go up in flames instead. The Irish name means the field of the sun worshippers. The ring stands on private land but is open to visitors.
