From the half-collapsed bridge over the Adyar estuary, fishermen say they hear women's wails rise across the water at night.

The so-called Broken Bridge was built in 1967 to carry fishermen across the mouth of the Adyar River at Besant Nagar in Chennai, but partly collapsed as early as 1977 and was left as a concrete torso in the water. Since then the stump has gathered a dark reputation, reinforced by drownings and crimes in the desolate area. Fishermen setting nets in the estuary tell of women's screams and weeping rising over the water in the dark, with no one to be seen on the span. After dusk most people avoid the place, where only the waves and the severed roadway greet a visitor.
