Chir Batti Ghost Lights
Gujarat · Indien · Natural site
Across the pitch-black grasslands of Kutch dance the unexplained chir batti ghost lights – said to follow anyone who dares walk towards them.
In the Banni grasslands and the Chhari Dhand wetland of Kutch, herders and border soldiers have for generations seen ball-shaped lights of red, blue and yellow hovering a few feet above the ground. Known locally as chir batti – ghost lights – they can hang perfectly still, then suddenly move faster than a person can run. They are said at times to trail night travellers, and locals tell of lost souls being lured ever deeper into the roadless marshland. Scientists suggest self-igniting marsh gas, but no proof has ever been produced, and villagers still avoid the plains after dark.
