Feroz Shah Kotla — Delhi · Indien · Fort

Every Thursday, thousands leave letters, milk and incense for the djinns said to dwell in the fort's vaults.

The fortress of Feroz Shah Kotla was built around 1354 as the heart of the sultan's capital Firozabad, and its ruins are today believed to house djinns – shape-shifting beings of smokeless fire from Islamic tradition. Every Thursday, believers arrive with letters, photographs, incense, milk and grain to petition the spirits for help; the letters are photocopied and left in several alcoves, like applications filed with an invisible bureaucracy. The chief of the djinns, 'Laat waale baba', is said to reside by the Ashoka Pillar, and the practice took off in 1977 after a holy man declared that wishes were granted here. Visitors report whispers and a dense presence in the dark vaults.
