Empress Carlotta's curse is said to hang over Miramare - while Maximilian's gentle spirit strolls the park.

The gleaming white castle of Miramare on the Gulf of Trieste was built in the 1850s by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, who left it to become Emperor of Mexico and was executed by firing squad in 1867. His wife Carlotta lost her mind with grief and is said to have laid a curse before departing: any royal or military guest who sleeps in the castle will die a violent death far from home - a fate that befell Archduke Franz Ferdinand, among others. Guards and visitors also tell of Maximilian's quiet spirit roaming at night through the great park he never got to enjoy. The castle is today one of Italy's most visited museums.
