Castle of Charles V, Monopoli
Puglia · Italia · Fortress
In Monopoli's harbour fortress, a ghost was seen walking straight through a wall – where a bricked-up doorway was later discovered.
The pentagonal fortress at Monopoli's old harbour was built in 1552 as part of Charles V's defensive line against pirates and served as a prison well into the twentieth century. Here, several witnesses have described a mysterious figure in a dark tunic moving between two rooms – straight through the wall. When the masonry was later examined, an old bricked-up doorway was discovered exactly where the figure used to pass, as if the ghost still followed the rooms' original layout. The spectre is said to be shy and indifferent to the living, but the tale has made the fortress one of Puglia's most talked-about haunted strongholds.
