Sanluri Castle
Sardegna · Italia · Castle
In Sardinia's only still-inhabited medieval castle, a queen's voice is said to echo through the halls at night.
The castle of Sanluri, raised in 1355 on the orders of Peter IV of Aragon, is the only one of Sardinia's 88 medieval castles still habitable and today houses a museum. In 1409 the decisive battle was fought here in which Aragon crushed the army of the Judicate of Arborea – a turning point in the island's history. According to folklore the castle is haunted by a queen, whose voice is said to be heard in the halls at night. The site is also tied to the legend of the Beauty of Sanluri, a young woman said to have beguiled the victorious King Martin the Younger – and, so the story goes, consumed him to death in revenge before he died of fever a month after the battle.
