Underground Naples
Neapel · Italia · Tunnel
Forty metres below Via dei Tribunali the munaciello's realm begins — the little monk who climbs up the well into your kitchen.
Below Piazza San Gaetano open the Greeks' quarries, which the Romans turned into an aqueduct and the twentieth century into air-raid shelters. Until 1885 water reached the houses through well shafts, and the men who kept the system, the pozzari, climbed those shafts in a hood and a short working cape that looked like a friar's habit. When something went missing in a kitchen, or a coin lay on the table in the morning, Neapolitans put it down to 'o munaciello, the little monk with silver buckles on his shoes. In her Leggende napoletane, Matilde Serao gives him another origin: the child of Caterina Frezza and the young Stefano Mariconda, killed on the rooftops on his way to her, born in a convent and dressed in a small habit by the nuns. He brings luck or ruin according to how he is treated, and nobody speaks ill of him.
