Galeria Antica
Rom · Italia · Abandoned site
The village emptied after a run of unexplained deaths. Once a year hoofbeats return: the minstrel Senz'affanni rides in on a white horse.
Twenty kilometres north-west of Rome, the ruins of Galeria sit on a spur of tufa — a medieval village abandoned in the nineteenth century after its people died one after another of what they themselves called a curse. Walls, gateways and a roofless church remain, all swallowed by ivy. The legend the villagers took with them concerns Senz'affanni — Without-a-care — a wandering minstrel who died here some three hundred years ago. Once a year, they say, he returns on a white horse and rides singing through the empty lanes. Visitors who climb to the ruins at dusk report hoofbeats on the stone behind them and a distant voice among the house foundations.
