Palazzo Braschi

Rom · Italia · Palace

Heels click on the marble in the museum's empty halls — Duchess Costanza is still receiving guests nobody else can see.

Costanza Falconieri was barely fifteen when Pope Pius VI married her to his nephew Luigi Braschi Onesti, the wedding held in the Sistine Chapel before all of Roman society. She became famous for her parties in the newly built palace beside Piazza Navona — and for the many lovers gossip attributed to her. The building now houses the Museo di Roma, and it is in the least visited upper rooms that staff and visitors say they meet her: heeled footsteps approaching across the marble with nobody in sight, lights and shadows moving along the corridors, and an elegant female silhouette that dissolves in the great staircase hall right in front of whoever is watching.
