Palazzo Cenci
Rom · Italia · Palace
On the night of 11 September, Beatrice Cenci climbs the stairs of her childhood home — carrying her severed head in her hands.
In the dark quarter beside the Tiber, Beatrice Cenci grew up with her father Francesco, a man whose cruelty toward his wife and children was notorious across Rome. In 1598 he died in a fall from a balcony at the family fortress of Petrella Salto; Beatrice, her brother and her stepmother were convicted of the murder and beheaded on 11 September 1599, while the crowd across the river cried for mercy. Legend says she returns here every year on the night of her execution, to the palace staircase, dressed in white and carrying her head in her arms. Residents of the lanes around Piazza Cenci speak of a sudden cold draught in the stairwell and of lights appearing behind the windows of rooms that stand empty.
