The row of Mocenigo palaces on the Grand Canal near Campo San Samuele carries one of Venice's darkest tales of hospitality. The patrician Giovanni Mocenigo lured the philosopher Giordano Bruno here in February 1591 to be taught his art of memory. When the lessons did not deliver what he had hoped, he denounced his guest as a heretic and handed him to the Inquisition on 22 May 1592. Bruno was taken on to Rome, refused to retract a single idea and was burned at the stake in 1600. Legend says his shape never left the house. By tradition he shows himself not to everyone but only to old women, at one particular window, his face blackened by fire as he died. Burst water pipes and unexplained flooding were long put down to him.
