Ponte de la Dona Onesta

Venedig · Italia · Bridge

The only honest woman's head in the city is made of stone, the mocker said. The saying goes: the day an honest woman crosses, the bridge falls.

The name of this bridge over the Rio de la Frescada is documented from 1537, and Venetians tell it two ways. The mild version: on an August day two men argued here about the faithfulness of women, and when Jacomo di Campalto claimed that many women are faithful, the other pointed at a small woman's head carved in stone on the house wall beside them and mocked him — there is the only honest woman in the whole world, a head of stone. The head is still set in the wall today. The darker version says the stone face is a stonecutter's wife who took her own life after being violated by a nobleman. An old saying belongs to the bridge too: the day an honest woman crosses it, the bridge will collapse — and it is standing yet.
