The bridge over the Rio de San Trovaso in Dorsoduro is called Maravegie, the marvels. One account says it was raised in a single night by unknown hands, and those who saw it in the morning cried el xe un miracolo, it is a miracle. The other legend concerns a family in the quarter with seven daughters: six unusually beautiful, the seventh, Maria, awkward and sour-tempered. Among the suitors who came to the house was a young oarsman, strong and handsome, but the more often he visited the sicker he grew, until he could no longer pull an oar. One evening he looked up at Maria's window and found her kneeling before the crucifix, praying for his health and offering her own life in exchange. His strength returned, he won the regatta, and he married her.
