The baker's boy Piero Fasiol was executed for a murder he did not commit. His name was called out before every death sentence in Venice after that.

This lane in San Marco takes its name from the killings that happened here: it was dark and full of recesses, ideal for an ambush. Legend says it was along the Calle dei Assassini that the nobleman Alvise Guoro was murdered in 1507, under Doge Leonardo Loredan. Suspicion fell on Piero Fasiol, a young baker's son found nearby with a dagger he had picked up. He was tortured, confessed and was executed. When the real killer later confessed, the boy was long dead. The Council of Ten is said to have ordered afterwards that the phrase Ricordeve del poaro fornareto — remember the poor baker's boy — be spoken before every deliberation on a death sentence. Two red lamps on the south side of St Mark's are said to burn in his memory.
